Top 5 Best Hairstyles for Scuba Diving

Figuring out what to do with your hair whilst scuba diving is a major dilemma for some women (and men!)

Sure, leaving your hair wild like a mermaid might look great in an Instagram picture, but just how practical is it?

There’s nothing more annoying than finding your hair tangled around the top of the tank valve. Or coming loose altogether and flying about getting caught in your mask!

I’ve probably tried just about every hairstyle in the book but here’s what I’ve found are the top 5 best hairstyles for scuba diving...

1. French Plaits

Easily taking the number one spot is french plaits (or braids). Whether it be one singular plait straight down the middle of your head or one either side, this hairstyle definitely keeps everything secure and in place. It takes a little patience but once you’ve got the hang of it, there will be no looking back. Not all of us were taught this style when we were little but luckily if you want to learn, there’s a bunch of different tutorials available on YouTube.

2. High Bun/Low Bun

Fixing your hair into a ballerina bun is an extremely easy and simple hairstyle to create but whether you want it high on top of your head or low is up to you. Watch out though, a low bun can sometimes interfere with your mask or sit a little uncomfortable at the back of your head if your tank is a bit high.

3. High Pony

You’re bound to see a lot of ladies wearing their hair in a simple high ponytail to keep it out of their faces. It’s probably the most go-to hairstyle for diving, however if you have super long hair, this hairstyle may not be the one for you as it still might get caught in the tank valve. Why not try fixing it into a high plait/braid instead?

4. Space Buns

We’re really bringing the 90’s back with this one! Whether you want high buns or low buns, this hairstyle is super quick, fashionable and of course, protective. Just part your hair down the middle and divide it into two sections, then wrap the hair around itself on one side and repeat on the other to create some crazy looking buns! Your mask should be able to slide right over with no complications.

5. Headwrap/hood

Lastly, if you’re prone to flyaways or just really want to keep your hair covered then why not invest in a decent hood or headwrap? There are a variety of different styles available, even some to match your scuba gear! You’ll find that a vast majority of men and women use both headwraps and hoods to protect their heads whilst diving and as an added bonus, keep their ears warm!
